“Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle station.” Nerds quote this line from the emperor, followed by a little laugh. I’m not a big Star Wars fan, but I always thought the little laugh was because most of us nerd types go through life functioning so below our operational abilities that the thought of being fully operational feels so dark side. The Wishing Tree

In my younger days, I was something of a spiritual nut-job. If you went out into the wilderness and saw a fool being shamanic or playing a spirit drum, that might have been me. Deep Space Nine!

I just finished watching the whole series of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on Netflix. It took me three months to get through all 7 seasons. This blog post isn’t a review of the show but more about what DS9 means in my life.

I first watched DS9 during its original run, watching every episode in weekly syndication, but I hadn’t watched a single episode again since then. Revisiting it has made me nostalgic and helped me to see where a lot of my mores and ways of relating come from. Continue Reading

The Trump Card

I came up with an idea to write a blog post called “The Trump Card”. It would have been a sharp satirical takedown of presidential candidate Trump served up with vulgarity (unusual for me) and wit—stuff like I used to blog in my younger days when we lived in a more open and free society. But these times took hold of me, and I realized that such a post would miss the mark because we the people have changed. Trump rises because of the darkness in our collective heart.
